The Artist

Mike Giant

Born in upstate New York in 1971, raised in Albuquerque on BMX, skateboards, punk and hip-hop. He started writing graffiti as Giant just before college, walked out of architecture school in 1993 to draw graphics for Think Skateboards in San Francisco, and picked up a tattoo machine a few years later. Graffiti, skate graphics, tattoos, fine art, streetwear. He's done all of it, mostly with a black pen.

01

Apprenticed under Nalla Smith in 1998, then tattooed at East Side Ink, Newskool and Everlasting.

02

Co-founded Rebel8 in 2003. Shown in galleries in San Francisco, Paris, Sydney, Barcelona and Milan.

03

Red-green colourblind. Which might explain why his best stuff is in black and white.

SPECIAL BUILD

The Collaboration

BACK IN THE CHAIR

We met Mike in California in 2008, right when fixed gear stopped being a messenger thing and went global. He rode every day, drew all the time, and cared about the kids on track bikes as much as the bikes. Two years later he had a show in Milan. Then came RAM bars, bar tape, Ass Savers and a long list of Cinelli parts wearing his lines.

For Cinelli Icons, Mike went through the archive. The Laser, the 1A stem, the Unicanitor, the Bat bar, the Integralter, RAM, a set of lugs, a bottle, a roll of bar tape. He laid them all out like a tattoo flash sheet, the wall of designs you point at before you sit down and get inked. Pick one. Or take the whole wall.

In the middle, his snake coils around the winged C. Black and white, clean vector lines, screen-printed in Italy. Some things look better without colour.
